Letter from F A Lindemann [later 1st Lord Cherwell], (Christ Church, Oxford) to WSC, sending further letters from the Prime Minister [James Ramsay MacDonald] and Sir [Joseph] Austen Chamberlain on air defence. Particularly on the composition and terms of reference of the Air Defence Research Committee, commenting that Henry Tizard was a good man, but that both he and Harry Wimperis received salaries from the Air Ministry, and that neither of the other two members "have ever had anything to do with aeroplanes". Stating that what was required was a committee with instructions to find new methods of air defence, and power to carry out the necessary experiments. Includes letter from Chamberlain (58 Rutland Gate [London]) to Lindemann and WSC, enclosing a letter [not present] from MacDonald. Chamberlain states that he had provisionally replied to the Prime Minister informing him that he and WSC would ask for an interview after Parliament met. He had also told MacDonald that a new Committee [on air defence] should have a Chairman of the same character and standing as those appointed to the improvised air department, in order to have the co-operation of the departments concerned. Chamberlain had suggested 1st Lord Maclay, [?] Rhondda or Sir William Weir as examples, and said that the Committee should have the authority and funds to carry out research and enquiries; also that its work might require two or three years rather than two or three months. Finally he hopes that he, Lindemann and WSC could meet to talk it over in the week of 27th January. Annotated by WSC on 28th January, "I agree".
