Scope and Contents
Letter from Brendan Bracken, 20 Bishopsgate, London EC2 to WSC, commenting on the "political earthquake", a debate in the House of Commons on the "Hoare-Laval-Abyssinian plan. Stating that Stanley Baldwin was "incoherent, and his face a study in misery", "Duff [Cooper, Later Lord Norwich] looked as if he had just had a stroke" and that the only Ministers who looked pleased were "Neville Chamberlain (Samuel Hoare's principal backer in the Cabinet)" and John Simon, who of course was delighted that Hoare and Anthony Eden (later Lord Avon) "should be discredited". "Hoare had let the Government down "with a resounding bang", and the rage of the Government's press supporters like Geoffrey Dawson (The Times) and Lord Camrose "can hardly be described". Commenting that Eden was bitterly resentful, but would not resign, and that Baldwin was greatly discredited "the leader's feet are worse than clay, or even dung" Stating that he was delighted by events "Baldwin is a disingenuous and ungenerous dud" - at times of difficulty he "wavers and is pulled along by forceful or ruthless men like Chamberlain and Hoare".
