(Untitled), 28 Jan 1935
Scope and Contents
Letter from "Max" [1st Lord Beaverbrook, earlier Sir Max Aitken] (Stornoway House, Cleveland Row, St James's [London]) to WSC, quoting from WSC's article in the News of the World ["My Life", part 12] on the break-up of the Coalition Government of [David Lloyd] George in 1922, which he intends to write about himself, and asking for details of the letter to the leader of the Conservative Party (Austen Chamberlain) which WSC then joined in and Chamberlain's reply. Beaverbrook gives his view that the Coalition Government was brought down by the public's fear of Lloyd George's Near East policy, aiding the Greeks against the Turks, and warns WSC that his narrative is not friendly to him, Lloyd George or [1st Lord] Birkenhead [earlier F E Smith] but justifies [Andrew] Bonar Law. In a postscript, Beaverbrook asks whether WSC is writing anything about his dissatisfaction when Lloyd George went to Genoa [Italy] in 1922 to try and impose an Allied peace on Europe.
