Scope and Contents

Letter from Sir Alfred Knox, South Street, London W1 to WSC, on "axing" of officers in the Indian Army. Stating that although it was true that there was no surplus of officers in the Indian Army, there was a large surplus of a certain rank, owing to the War, and these people were blocking the flow of promotion, and that this could not be considered an economy measure as the Government would have to pay gratuities and pensions to the axed officers, and pay the officers recruited to take their places.
