Scope and Contents

Letter from Lord Halsbury to WSC, on Report of the Committee of Privileges on allegations that 17th Lord Derby [earlier Lord Stanley] and Sir Samuel Hoare [later 1st Lord Templewood, Secretary of State for India] had suppressed evidence to the Joint Select Committee on Indian Constitutional Reform. The Report had accepted that the evidence had been altered, but that the "persuasion" by Hoare and Derby had not constituted a breach of privilege. Halsbury describes the Report as "contemptible", and Hoare's actions as "peaceful picketing".
