Scope and Contents

Letter from [WSC] to [David Lloyd George] denying Lloyd George's assertion that WSC had forced Turkey into the war by seizing the Turkish warships [being completed in British shipyards] and by bombarding the Dardanelles forts, but admitting that once Turkish complicity with German naval operations in the Black Sea had become apparent he urged that Britain should work for unity among the Christian Balkan states. Encloses a copy of a letter from him to Sir Edward Grey [later Lord Grey of Fallodon] to this effect [see CHAR 2/114/18-19]. Annotated typescript draft. Another copy, without annotations, at CHAR 2/114/23-25.
