Telegram from Lieutenant-General Sir John Maxwell to Lord Kitchener conveying a message from General Sir William Birdwood expressing doubt about the Navy being able to force the Dardanelles unassisted, insisting the weather should be settled before troops are landed, explaining why he is averse to landing troops at the Bulair Lines and recommending a cautious advance from Helles Point (5 Mar). Printed copy. Telegram from Lieutenant-General Sir John Maxwell to Lord Kitchener conveying a message from General Sir William Birdwood repeating his belief that the Navy cannot force the Dardanelles unaided and stating that if military co-operation is needed he will make his objective the line Kilid Bahr - Gabatepe. Fears that troop transports might still be liable to loss from guns after the straits have been forced (6 Mar). Printed copy.
