(Untitled), 30 Nov 1915
Scope and Contents
Letter from Lord Curzon (1 Carlton House Terrace, [London]) to WSC enclosing papers [see CHAR 2/68/26-31] showing that in response to the General Staff's recommendation that Gallipoli should be evacuated, which was accepted by the War Committee, Curzon had drafted a memorandum stating the arguments against evacuation, which was supported in Cabinet by 5th Lord Lansdowne, Lord Selborne and Lord Crewe and opposed by Andrew Bonar Law and David Lloyd George. A decision has been postponed , which Curzon believes will make evacuation more difficult. Lord Kitchener, having decided against evacuation of Gallipoli, has returned to Britain to prevent what he sees as a conspiracy against him [to oust him from the War Office]. Lord Derby is to report the complete failure of his recruiting scheme but Curzon and others in the Cabinet are insistent that a bill for conscription be introduced and will resign if it is put off again. Mentions [the retreate of the Mesopotamain Expeditionary Force from] Ctesiphon near Baghdad [Iraq]. Typescript copy at CHAR 2/68/20-25.
