Includes committee minutes of statements made by: Stanley Baldwin, Prime Minister; Lord Curzon of Kedleston, Lord Privy Seal; WSC, Chancellor of the Exchequer; Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister [earlier Sir Philip Lloyd-Greame, later Lord Swinton] President of the Board of Trade; Walter Guinness [later 1st Lord Moyne] Minister of Agriculture; [1st] Lord Peel, 1st Commissioner of Works; [1st] Lord Birkenhead [earlier F E Smith] Secretary of State for India; Neville Chamberlain, Minister of Health; [Sir] Arthur Steel-Maitland, Minister of Labour; and Sir Laming Worthington-Evans, Secretary of State for War.The minutes relate to the need for a reduction in public expenditure in the light of the country's serious financial difficulties. Suggested economies include: a reduction in naval estimates; the abolition of yeomanry regiments and amalgamation of cavalry regiments; the re-organisation of central government and the abolition of several post-war departments such as the Ministry of Transport, the Mines Department and the Department of Overseas Trade; funding the unemployment insurance bill; and postponing civil and military new works.
