Correspondents include: Oswyn Murray on transport to Cairo (3); Sir Percy Cox, High Commissioner of Mesopotamia [Iraq, and parts of southeast Turkey, southwest Iran and Syria] (2); Sir Edgar Bonham-Carter, judicial advisor in Mesopotamia; [Edwin Montagu] Secretary of State for India on the administration of Aden [South Yemen, later part of Yemen].Includes telegrams from WSC to the individuals mentioned above and to David Lloyd George, Prime Minister, on the progress of the conference, negotiations between T E Lawrence ["Lawrence of Arabia", later T E Shaw] and Feisal, the garrison in Palestine, the occupation of Transjordan [later Jordan] and subsidies to Arab chiefs; various officials at the Colonial Office on the progress of the conference including Sir John Shuckburgh [Head of Middle East Department] on the agenda for the Conference and Treasury policy regarding the disposal of surplus Mesopotamian revenues; Edward Marsh [Private Secretary to WSC] on the illness of Sir Archibald Sinclair [later 1st Lord Thurso] and the installation of Feisal; Lord Allenby [High Commissioner for Egypt]; and Austen Chamberlain [Chancellor of the Exchequer] on estimates for Palestine and Mesopotamia.Other subjects include: staffing arrangements for the conference; relations between Iraq and Ibn Saud [Sultan of Najd, Arabia]; reductions in the Middle East estimates and in the garrison for Mesopotamia; the opening up of a route between Baghdad [Iraq] and Cairo; dealings with Turkey over territorial claims and the Treaty of Versailles; the situation in Persia [Iran]; and agreements with France over Syria.Also includes details of the conference programme and papers summarising British policy in Mesopotamia, Palestine, Transjordan and Arabia.
