Scope and Contents

Correspondents on the Council include: [Samuel] Vyvyan Adams, asking WSC to speak at the Council, and on his support for WSC's speeches; A H Richards, General Organizing Secretary of the World Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi Council, on subjects including meetings of the Council, and people invited to speak at meetings (27); Leslie Carruthers, Anti- Nazi Council, on the meetings (4); Oliver Locker-Lampson (2); Lady Violet Bonham Carter [earlier Violet Asquith and Violet, Lady Bonham Carter, later Lady Asquith of Yarnbury] on policies to adopt towards Hitler and alternatives to the League of Nations.Other subjects include: strategy depending on whether Italy stays in the League of Nations.Also includes: draft summaries of the Council's aims and manifesto; reports of Council meetings, including summaries and transcripts of speeches by individuals including Sir Walter Citrine, Chairman, Sir Norman Angell [Member of the Council of Royal Institute of International Affairs], [Henry] Wickham Steed, WSC, Margaret Bondfield [National Officer, National Union of General and Municipal Workers], 2nd Lord Melchett [earlier Sir Henry Mond], George Lathan [President, National Federation of Professional Workers], Duncan Sandys, Hugh Dalton, Lady Violet Bonham Carter and Frederick Norwood, on subjects including the threat from Hitler, the stand to take against Nazism, Nazi persecution of the Jews and others in Germany, Nazi rearmament, including in gas, anti- French feeling in Britain, Italy's invasion of Abyssinia [later Ethiopia], the weakness of the League of Nations, finding cross-party common ground against Nazism, the use of sanctions against Italy, the threat from Japan, boycotting German goods and British responsibility for the state of Germany; notes and copies of correspondence by WSC and Violet Pearman [Secretary to WSC] to individuals listed above and also to others including 1st Lord Cecil of Chelwood [President, League of Nations Union, earlier Lord Robert Cecil].
