Gertrude, Lady Grigg: letters to Dorothy Hammonds, 1934 - 1939
Scope and Contents
The majority of this series (PJGG 6/2-9) consists of Gertrude Grigg's letters to Dorothy Hammonds. Starting with the voyage out, the letters are continuous until 1936, when Lady Grigg returned to England for a visit. Though the correspondence apparently continued after her return, only seven letters survive of the later period, and these were not in scrapbooks.
Unlike her letters to Thomas Jones (see section 7) these letters deal with her personal life in Simla and New Delhi, and occasional visits to other places: the social round, clothes, her houses, gardens, and furniture. She does not like living in India because, although she works on educational committees and does some teaching, she cannot (she feels) help where Indians are unable or unwilling to help themselves. Compared with the letters to Thomas Jones, there is little about politics - though something of personalities. At all times she is supportive of her husband.

Arrangement
These letters (except the few that have survived of 1938 and 1939) were pasted up in three scrapbooks by Miss Hammonds. The letters, photographs, newspaper cuttings, and mementos remain in the order Miss Hammonds gave them (except when a letter was out of chronological sequence), so that photographs appear sometimes proximate to the relevant event, sometimes with the letter in which they were sent. Some pages or portions of the scrapbook had been removed, and these seem to have been photographs or newspaper cuttings or cartoons.
