Biographical / Historical
Sir Stratford Canning (1786-1880), 1st Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. He was admitted as a Scholar in 1806, but resigned his scholarship to become a Fellow-Commoner in 1807. In the same year he entered the Foreign Office, eventually becoming a diplomat styled the 'Great Elchi', involved in near Eastern affairs. He was MP for Sarum (1828) and King's Lynn (1835-41) and was created Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe in May 1852.
