Arthur Mann was born on the 16th May 1850 in Norwich, the youngest of the five children of Henry James Mann (1809-1860) and Ann Couzens Jubey (1811-1891). Mann became a chorister at Norwich cathedral. In 1870 he was appointed organist of St Peter's, Wolverhampton. In 1871 he moved to Tettenhall, with its collegiate church, where he met his future wife, Sarah Ann Ransford (1854-1918), whom he married on 25th November 1874. He matriculated at New College, Oxford in 1872, obtaining the degree of BMus in 1874. Following a brief spell, from 1875, at Beverley Minster, he was appointed King's College organist in 1876, a position he held for over 50 years. He was appointed University organist in 1897. He died in Cambridge on the 19th November 1929 and is buried in the Grantchester churchyard.
