Immediate Source of Acquisition

It would appear that REF requested personal letters received by him be returned to their authors on his death. Margery Fry partially followed his instructions in 1935, though she asked the more signigificant of his friends if she might retain their letters for the purposes of Virginia Woolf's projected biography. For the same reason, she also solicited the return of REF's letters and added them to his papers. During the preparation of Denys Sutton's 'Letters of Roger Fry' (Chatto and Windus: London, 1972), further original REF letters were accumulated, together with photocopies and transcripts. In due course, Pamela Diamand transferred these to the Fry Papers.
