'Sir Isaac's Farm', 1714-03-17 - 1718-03-08
Scope and Contents
Indenture dated 17 March 1714 recording a charge on property in Northamptonshire (the Great Northampton Way, Great Whinney and Breadshaw Corner) in favour of Catherine Conduitt née Barton. Signed and sealed by all the parties: Matthew Barton and his wife Hannah Barton (widow of the late Robert Barton) and Sir Isaac Newton on the one part, and John and Margaret Warner on the other part.
Robert Barton married Sir Isaac Newton's half-sister Hannah, and Robert made Hannah and Sir Isaac his executors. Hannah remarried to Matthew Barton. This document recites the late Robert Barton's bequests of £400 dowries to each of his daughters (Elizabeth who married Thomas Barton, Margaret who married John Warner, Jane who married Alexander Skins, Barbara who married William Lisle, Mary who married Lionell Falkener, and Catherine) upon her marriage, with £18 annual maintenance to be paid to each of them until their marriage, to be charged upon his holdings in the parish of Pilton in Northamptonshire: the Great Northampton Way, Cooke's House in Brigstock, and Richard Fuller's house in Brigstock which was actually 3 dwellings. At the time of this indenture all of the daughters had received their dowries (with about £50 owing to Elizabeth) except Catherine and Margaret. This indenture recites exchanges of property and money to the effect that John and Margaret Warner became owners of the Great Northampton Way, and of Great Whinney and Breadshaw Corner, so long as they paid the £18 to Catherine until her portion came payable, and that they paid her £400 dowry when it was payable.
The indenture is endorsed to state that John Conduitt and Catherine (née Barton) his wife, had received her dowry. Dated 8 March 1718. Stamped with a small seal and the Conduitts' signatures.
Also endorsed (March 17th, 1714) to say Matthew Barton had received £200 from John Warner, and signed by the witnesses to the original signing.
