McBryde drawings, 1905
Scope and Contents
Drawings almost certainly by James McBryde.
- Pen and ink illustration showing a well-dressed man with walking stick and top hat, speaking with a shady looking character in a trenchcoat. They are standing in what might be an antique shop. Cupboards line two walls, and an elaborate cot with grotesque ornamentation is behind the latter character. This may be the drawing commissioned by MRJ from McBryde to prove he could illustrate ghost stories;
- pen and ink cartoon of a young lad in Eton dress standing before the Provost's desk saying 'Please sir may I have leave to go down into the town'; on the other side a pencil cartoon of a 'young hopeful reading out telegram' to his valet who stands with salver at the ready;
- pencil drawing of ?MRJ smoking a pipe, head and hsoulders and reading a newspaper; on the other side a pencil cartoon of a young lady pushing a pram in an urban setting with infant standing up in the pram, saying something that alarms the young lady and a policeman behind her (no caption is given).
