Plans by Kennedy and Nightingale, Architects, 1924 - 1934
Scope and Contents
In 1923-24 a competition was held to design a building to replace the Wilkin's Library and Provost's Lodge. A new library was to be the centrepiece of the new building. The competition was won by Rowse and Budden. Sir Gilbert Scott was also invited to submit. But both designs were ultimately not accepted. Later George Kennedy produced a design for the projected long range to replace the library and Old Lodge, but this was also not put into action.

Biographical / Historical
The building designed by Kennedy and Nightingale was actually begun and has left a trace of itself as the north range of Bodley's building (Y staircase) and the white building to its west (S staircase, toward Wilkins' Old Provost's Lodge). It was never completed because the Fellows changed their minds in 1933, partly due to a financial slump and partly due to changes in architectural tastes.
