'The Eastern Circuit' includes manors in Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Herfordshire and Essex; (roughly) Borehouse, Barton Priory, Biggin, Caston Hall, Coltishall, Dunton, Grantchester, Great Bricett, Horstead, Isleham, Kersey, Lessingham, Overhall, and Toft Monks. 'The Western Circuit' includes manors in Wiltshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, and Exeter; (roughly) Ogbourne, Combe, Monxton, Homington, Chalk, Brixton Deverill, Stour Provost, St James Priory, Sampford Courtenay, Ringwood and Fordingbridge.

Description of seals

Quantity: 31 balls of wax, 15 with seal impressions and 16 without, attached on 8 tags. For the purpose of this description all 31 balls of wax will be called ‘seals’. Attachment: Pendants on tags. Tag 1: Seal 1; Tag 2: Seals 2, 3, 4, 5; Tag 3: Seals 6, 7, 8, 9; Tag 4: Seals 10, 11, 12, 13; Tag 5: Seals 14, 15, 16, 17; Tag 6: Seals 18, 19, 20, 21; Tag 7: Seals 22, 23, 24, 25, 26; Tag 8: Seals 27, 28, 29, 30, 31. Colour: All seals are red.

Damage: Seals 1-3, 5, 7-20, and 22-31: 0 – No damage. Seals 4 and 6: 1 - Slight damage. Seal 21: 5 – Severe damage.

Shape and size: Parchment protective wraps are present on seals 1, 2, 6, 8, 12, 14-16, 18, 19, 23, 26, 27, 30 and 31. The parchment wraps completely cover seals 23, 26 and 30. Seals 3, 5, 7, 9-11, 13, 17, 22-26, and 28-30 have no impression, they are oblong balls of wax approximately 25mm long x 15mm diameter. Fingerprints are legible in many of them. The other sesals have these shapes and sizes: 1) 12mm circle. 2) 11mm circle. 4) 15mm x 11mm. Octagonal with longer vertical and horizontal sides. 6) 11mm circle. 8) 13mm circle. 12) 11mm x 10mm. Octagonal. 14) 8mm circle. 15) 14mm x 12mm. Remains leave original shape unclear, suggest polygon. 16) 16mm x 10mm. Circle with crown on top. 18) 18mm circle. 19) 15mm x 12mm. Octagonal. 20) 11mm x 9mm. Octagonal. 21) Fragmentary remains leave original shape and size unclear. Suggest rounded shape. 27) 8mm circle. 31) 10mm x 8mm. Octagonal. All of the seals except 3 have names written on the tag above the seal. Impression(s): All seals single-sided. Most of the seals are in good condition but many of the impressions are poor and difficult to read. 1) Bird, face on. Legend illegible. 2) Bird in profile. Legend illegible. 3) No impression. 4) Front-facing haloed figure holding staff horizontally with [crucified Christ]. 5) No impression. 6) Tool or weapon. 7) No impression. 8) 4-legged animal [lion]. Legend legible. 9) No impression. 10) No impression. 11) No impression. 12) [Tree or beehive] 13) No impression. 14) Bird with both wings outstretched. 15) Figure – bird? – within circle. Legend partially legible. 16) Monkey ? eating spherical object. 17) No impression. 18) Shield within circle. Shield contains 2 wavy pallets. Legend illegible. 19) 4-legged animal walking in profile. 20) Stag sitting on grass. 21) Fragmentary remains leave original motif unclear. A few letters of the legend are partially legible. 22) No impression. 23) Parchment wrap covers the seal. 24) No impression. 25) No impression. 26) Parchment covers seal. 27) Front-facing winged creature [dragon or bat]. 28) No impression. 29) No impression. 30) No impression. 31) Head of a person in profile facing to the right. Wearing some sort of wreath or hairdo.
