Photographs of King's and Cambridge, 1934 - 1978

Scope and Contents

Photographic prints and paper printouts of digital scans of black and white negatives and 35 mm colour slides taken by Shire. The prints comprise:
- the path between the bridge and Gibbs' building, looking east and looking west, with bulbs blooming [Spring 1934];
- looking west from Bodley's court [Spring 1934];
- the bridge from the south, the Chapel in the background [Spring 1934];
- interior of V5 (x3) [Spring 1934];
- Conduit Tail house garden, which was behind Conduit Head and in which the Shires lived; Helena Mennie (later Shire) is in two of the photos.
The printouts of slides show various views around King's and Cambridge including the Glanville memorial in King's , and the wedding party of one of Shire's daughters outside the Chapel west end.

Biographical / Historical

Edward Samuel Shire (1908-78) came up to King's in 1927. He was made Fellow in 1933 and served as Third Bursar 1935-39, Acting Vice-Provost 1964-65, and Vice-Provost 1965-70. His wife Helena Mary (Mennie) supervised at King's as an Associate Lecturer in English.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The negatives were given in January and April 2018, and the slides were loaned for digitising in May of 2018, by A. Gardner-Medwin. The scans and prints were made by Streamline Imaging in May 2018. The printouts of scans were made in October 2019 by the archivist.
