'C.C.S. Letters', 1884 - 1897
Scope and Contents
Some letters are loose and some are attached to the pages of a bound volume. Most letters are replies to Wilson's request (not included) for photos, memories, and addresses of unknown members. One letter from Oscar Browning mentions the construction of the Ark (1886). ‘The Ark Angel to the Brethren ... What is conceived is more than realized. The books we have imagined are more than written, the deeds we have intended more than done. O my brethren, were we not all in Tomlinson, and one with all who think he is us? The ark has long been conceived, + therefore has been long existent. A mortal drew a shadow of the IDEA on paper, a slave is now carving a phantom of that drawing. It is said that he will have finished in a few weeks of mortal time. Perhaps at our yearly feast this faint adumbration will appear. Then shall we see how little the materialized thing partakes of the ideal archetype + we shall return with self satisfaction to our proper task of contemplating the ineffable and the unfeasible.'
