 File
Reference Code: GBR/0272/KCAC/1/6/Oakley

Scope and Contents

Printouts and digital scans of photographs of:
- the University computer EDSAC (3 photos),
- John Tresidder Sheppard, Donald Beves, Kenneth Harrison, Boris Ord, John Saltmarsh and Ian Stephens (6 photos),
- cups won by the Small Bore Rifle Club (1 photo),
- interior views of Oakley's Bodley's room, X2 in 1953 (6 photos).

The picture of Ian Stephens was taken for the dust cover of his book 'The Horned Moon'. Donald Beves was photographed while appearing in a pageant of British history performed outside St Johns c. May 1955. Kenneth Harrison is walking along the Cam during an event, glass in hand.

The small-bore rifle club was a University club shooting .22 rifles which at the time used the 25yd. range at the Leys school. The SBRC at the time won all the (county) local cups, all the Universities Athletic Union trophies and various postal leagues. Oakley, its secretary in 1953, won 2 gold medals at the world shooting championships in Moscow in 1958.

Among the pictures on the walls of X2 are prints of those of Ian Stephens and Provost Sheppard held here, the actress Nanette Newman whom Oakley photographed for the Varsity 'pinup' feature when she was acting in Cambridge, an Indian girlfriend of another unnamed undergraduate, Jane Sydney from Homerton who was also a member of the rifle club, the pageant where the photograph of Donald Beves was taken, and a photocopy of a Picasso Pan lithograph which Oakley subsequently inherited from his aunt. A team photo of the rifle team with some of the silverware can be seen above Oakley's speaker system.
