Correspondence with John Davy Hayward, 1916 - 1965
Scope and Contents
This greater part of this sub-series comprises correspondence from T.S. Eliot to J.D. Hayward, although the sub-series also contains files of correspondence written by others to the two men.
Items L/12/1-29 were found in May 1979 to be in folders held in spring-backed binders. At that time, the Librarian flattened out the letters which were folded, removed the metal fastenings, and re-housed the material in 64 acid-free envelopes. When the material was opened in January 2000, items L12/1-29 underwent conservation work to repair paper tears, and were then placed in 29 fascicles.
Items L/12/2-17 had been in envelopes labelled 'Miscellaneous I - XVI' by the Librarian in 1979. Except for the removal of T.S. Eliot's letter to J.D. Hayward dated 7 January 1957 from an envelope labeled 'Miscellaneous I' and its insertion within fascicle L/12/1/29, the original order within these envelopes has been preserved.
Postcards previously held in a separate box, and also in an envelope labeled 'Miscellaneous XIV' have been removed for conservation reasons, and are listed as L/12/3-4.
