Conditions Governing Access

Certain letters are closed under the terms of the Data Protection Act (1998) because they contain sensitive information about living individuals. Researchers may apply in writing to the Archivist to see the closed material, stating the intended use and precise nature of the information requested. The Archivist and Frances Partridge's Literary Executor will then consider whether non-sensitive parts of the letter may be made available, and they will consult the author if necessary. Please be aware that this decision may take several weeks and may incur photocopying charges. A statement to this effect is given with each closed file.

Arrangement

Frances Partridge arranged letters to her in a concertina file labeled 'FP 20'. In later years, she kept letters in 3 folders labeled: 'Nice letters from friends and fans'; 'Mrs Partridge corresp. Replied to' and 'Recent letters to FP from friends'. As these folders continue the sequence in concertina file 20, they have been incorporated into a single alphabetical sequence. She stored letters to Ralph Partridge in a concertina box file labeled 'FP 19', and letters from the Garnett family in a box file labeled 'FP 10'. These, also, have been incorporated into the single alphabetical sequence. See Appendix 1 for further details. In many cases, the author signed his/her first name only. Frances Partridge added the surnames to most of these names, others have been identified by Georgia Tennant or by cross-referencing with the address books.

Related Materials

Letters from some correspondents were also filed by Frances Partridge in her administrative papers (FCP/1/2). Letters from Frances Partridge are filed in section FCP/6/1/142.
