Bound journal volumes containing hand-written or typed entries covering personal and business affairs. Also included are annual summaries of books read, financial accounts, analyses of relationships and records of subsequent readings of the journal by AEF and others. Notes, corrections to the text and photographs have been added at a later date.

Journals prior to Nov. 1929 (1/1/1-5) contain reference numbers relating to documents which were originally pinned with the appropriate entry. These papers were extracted by AEF, given consecutive volume and item numbers, and placed by him within the 'Special Boxes' (2/1/1-14).

Journals from Nov. 1929 to Dec. 1942 (1/1/6-16) each contain a numeric index summarising the author or subject of correspondence, or the location of a photograph. These indices relate to the numbered documents catalogued as 3/1/96-200.
