Scope and Contents
A collection of photographs, scrapbooks and sketchbooks of members of the family of Lord John Russell, 1st Earl Russell (1792-1878). They include sketchbooks of his second wife, Fanny Elliot, whom he married in 1841, his stepdaughter, Adelaide, eldest daughter of his first wife Adelaide Lister (d. 1838), and their two children, Georgiana and Victoria. Family albums belonging to Lady Agatha contain photographs of her nephew, Bertrand Russell, and one album from her brother Rollo has photographs of many 19th century notables. Unfortunately many photographs are unidentified. There is a charming handwritten and illustrated account of the history of France by Adelaide Lister at the age of fourteen for her stepmother, Fanny Elliot, and a set of hand-painted alphabet cards made for a child, probably John, Viscount Amberley, depicting members of the family and household staff. The scrapbooks contain illustrations, sketches, and greetings cards, as well as contemporary cuttings from newspapers and magazines, including plates from the Afghan war of the 1870s and 1880s. There are articles by Lady Agatha and reviews of her book 'Gleanings, grave & gay', published in 1931.
