Scope and Contents
This is a small collection of some 150 letters written between 1872 and 1882 from Mary Hutton who was born and raised in Dublin to her mother and sisters, including those written when she was a student at Newnham, 1875-1877. The letters to her mother and sister Lilla when she was a student are most important because very few letters exist that describe life in the early days of the College. (Newnham Hall was opened to students in 1875.) There is also her Higher Local Certificate from the University of Cambridge listing her examination results from 1876, 1877, and 1879.
It is not always clear to which sister the letters are addressed. There seem to be three sisters: Lilla, Min, and Emily. Many are to Lilla, one or two to Min and Emily; but many are simply to 'my dear sister'. Mary Hutton was also known to her family as 'Mamie' and 'Bai'.
