Scope and Contents

This volume contains minutes of special and regular meetings of the board of Homerton College between 19 October 1894 and 14 June 1909. Several documents are adhered to and bound within the volume including memoranda, principal's reports, newspaper clippings, correspondence and a copy purchase agreement.
Recorded details of minutes include correspondence from educator George Jackson regarding the "Cambridge Conference" reunion of 1899 (p. 140); newspaper clippings about the stone laying at Morley Memorial in July 1899 (p. 123); negotiating with the mayor regarding the opening of New Street School in February 1901 (p. 161); Deacons of Emmanuel Chapel had nominated Dr J.R. Green to be a manager of the New Street School and building of the Principal's house is deferred (p. 174); "the draft agreement for the purchase of land" (p. 173); the end of the loan period for A Florentine Procession and should be retained for its "decorative value and good example of women'swork [sic], 7 February 1902 and a draft agreement for the acquistion of land "desired by the Board" (p. 195); "favourable opinions...expressed on the property purchase..." (p. 201); music courses reducing staff and purchase of The Florentine Procession (9 May 1902) over three years for £157.10.0 (p. 204); the death of principal John Charles Horobin on 26 July 1902 (p. 219); Mr. Foster and Dr. Reudel Harris to undertake dismissal and appointment of gardeners in light of the garden being in an "unsatisfactory state" (p. 222); George Buttress and other gardeners appointed and convenience being erected (p. 227); Miss Bodkin is appointed to fill the position rendered vacant by Miss Ashworth's retirement (p. 237); "a committee be appointed to examine the condition of the Library (p. 241); a mention of the Library committee (p. 249); Mr. ?Warman, librarian at Cambridge University Library to be requested to prepare a catalogue with the duty be ?further undertaken following the appointment of a permanent librarian (p. 252); the Rota Committee to ascertain the views of the Local Authority as to purchase [?of New Street School] (p.264); "interviews with the four presented candidates" for the position of principal on 17 March 1903 (p.267); "Miss M.A. [sic] Allan L.L.A. of the Higher Grade School Leeds be appointed as principal at a salary of £400..." and "Miss A. Her qualifications were not considered to rise to the level of academic distinction that has been desired." Powell, Master of Method at Homerton (interleaf at p. 310); a resolution to terminate Mrs. Brereton's appointment as bursar and for it to "come to an end as soon as possible" (p. 350); a staff list from New Street School (interleaf at p. 364); the "excellent influence of the principal and vice principal" in November 1905 (p. 380); a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Unwin dated 31 May 1906 on the death of Mr. Unwin (interleaf at p. 402); a copy of a supplement to an agreement of 25 July 1902 regarding the purchase of three pieces of freehold land (the "yellow land") as payment to Horobin's executors, known as "The Horobin Annuity" (interleaf at p. 406); a report on the unofficial resignation of Miss Waterhouse (interleaf at p. 418); the announcement of the death of Mr. William Payne, vice-chairman of the Board since 1896 (interleaf at p. 448); a request for consideration of the admission of "Egyptian students" in September 1909 (interleaf at p. 467); a report from the Library Committee from 15 November 1902 enquiring about the whereabouts of the College book stamp, Fraser's Golden Bough and 250 books that have disappeared from the Fiction Library in the last four or five years (interleaf at p. 478).

Physical Description

Light brown and navy half bound leather and ?glazed linen volume with ornamental line motif; gilt spine inscription on red leather that reads "MINUTE BOOK".
