Scope and Contents

From the File:

This file features the pottery and small finds excavated by A. J. B. Wace and his team during the summer of 1952 at Mycenae. During this season, key objectives included the continuation of excavation of the Prehistoric cemetery north-west beyond the citadel walls, investigation of the ‘Hellenistic Gymnasium’ and continuation of work in the House of the Oil Merchant and in the House of the Wine Merchant (part of the Cyclopean Terrace Building). A highlight of the dig that year was the discovery in the House of the Oil Merchant of clay tablets inscribed in Linear B – the first to come to light at Mycenae, the same year as the decipherment of Linear B by Michael Ventris
