Faculty of Classics supplementary teaching collection of Glass Lantern Slides, 1913-1925

Scope and Contents

These glass lantern slides form a supplementary body of visual teaching material in the Faculty of Classics, additional to those stored in the wooden lantern slide chests. They still occupy the 17 cardboard boxes which have always held them since 1920.

Custodial History

Upon the Archivist collecting these boxes from the Greek Lexicon office (G1.17) in the Faculty of Classics in September 2022, 19 boxes were empty. These were disposed of, except for Box 35 which was in excellent conditon and has been retained as a spare in case loose slides, also collected from the former Greek Lexicon room, are latterly identified as belnging to this series. Their original labels had the following numbers: 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35. None of these boxes had additional numerical codes for slides written on their labels and one posits that they were never used to hold slides and remained empty.
The 16 boxes which contained slides are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 . All have additonal numerical codes written on their labels.

Physical Description

The original containers are chipboard boxes, covered with brown waxed coth, lined with dark maroon paper, with a metal ring pull at the front of the box. H. 9.5 x W. 9.5 x D. 20 cm.
The lid is attached on the top of the box by a hinge of fabric. The labels are white paper, stenciled with letters and numbers by hand in black ink, and are afficed to the box above the metal ring pull.
Each glass slide is H. 8 x W. 8.2 cm. All are monochrome. Each slide is composed of two slips of glass, which are taped together on 3 edges with black tape and on the top edge with white tape. A small white label is affixed on the top right, front face of the slide with the reference code inked in red. This code is also inked by hand on the top flat edge of the slide so it is visible when the slides are packed together vertically in their box.
The slides are in excellent condition unless otherwise noted at file level.
