Photograph of the Sculpture gallery at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, 1920s
Scope and Contents
This series contains Alan Wace's personal photographic collection, including original bound photograph albums containing both positive and negative prints. Dated materials cover the period 1905 to 1941; however some undated material is inferred to be earlier or later than these dates, between circa 1901-1955. The photographs were in the majority taken during Wace's topographical and archaeological surveys on behalf of the British School at Athens, for example in Lakonia and Thessaly, and the excavations he undertook as a result in these locales. Other photographs were taken during Wace's travels to Italy, Asia Minor and Egypt, often with a focus on archaeological sites and sculpture collections in museums. Some albums are dedicated to photographs taken during Mediterranean study cruises, such as the Pelops and Peneios cruises in 1903-1904.
A few Wace family photos are also included.
