Letter from Richard Wyatt Hutchinson re pottery decoration on Minoan Crete, especially the ogival canopy, 1935-12-21
Scope and Contents
Hutchinson writes to Wace about his research into ogival canopies (a Minoan pattern). He details how the motif developed and points out some mistakes in Evans' analysis. He discusses the source of the motif and its regional adaptations, then informs Wace about his identification of a 'blob painter' or 'blob school' on Crete and gives various examples. He concludes that the ogival canopy motif originated in East Crete. He ends by discussing his recent travels with AJBW's student, Helen Thomas.
The letter encloses an offprint of Hutchinson's article on Uruk and Yortan.
