Biographical / Historical

Aymer de Valence, 2nd Earl of Pembroke was an Anglo-French nobleman. He was the son of William de Valence, son of Hugh X, Count of La Marche and Isabella of Angoulême. William de Valence came to the earldom of Pembroke through his marriage to Joan de Munchensi, granddaughter of William Marshal. Aymer de Valence was one of the Lords Ordainers appointed to restrict the power of Edward II and his favourite Piers Gaveston. Gaveston, as a prisoner in Aymer de Valence's custody, was removed and beheaded on the instigation of the Earl Lancaster. Aymer de Valence cooperated with the King throughout his life. He was married twice, and left no legitimate issue, though he did have one illegitimate son. His second wife was Marie de St. Pol, Foundress of Pembroke College. Aymer de Valence was buried in Westminster Abbey.
