Knox went to Rugby School before attending Trinity College, Oxford. After Oxford he joined the civil service but left in 1913 to come to Cambridge to prepare fro Holy Orders. He was ordained in 1914. He worked in several London parishes before taking on the role of Chaplain at Pembroke in 1940 in the absence of the Dean. In 1946 he was elected a Fellow of Pembroke.
