Biographical / Historical

Smart came up to Pembroke in 1739 and was awarded his B.A. in 1743/4, his M.A. in 1747 and became a Fellow of Pembroke in 1745. A well-regarded poet, he latterly fell into poverty and ill-health and was twice confined in a mad-house. He died in 1771, whilst in the King's Bench Prison, London.
