Biographical / Historical

Langton graduated M.A. at Cambridge by 1456 and was a fellow of Pembroke College by 1462. He served as senior proctor of the university for 1462-1463. He was made Bishop of St David's, Pembrokeshire in 1483, before being translated to the see of Salisbury in 1485. He also had an active diplomatic career, working with Edward IV and Richard III. Langton was elected Provost of Queen's College, Oxford, in 1489. He held the role until 1495. In 1493 he was elected Bishop of Winchester, Hampshire. In 1500 He was elected Archbishop of Canterbury in January 1501, but died a few days later and never took office.
