C. Fry, McMaster's tutor at Cheltenham, regarding his entry to the College, a short character reference, and some personal matters. 1 letter dated 11 June 1877 from McMaster's brother regarding the payment of caution money and Acheson's academic achievements; includes one further sheet containing biographical particulars mentioned in the letter. 1 letter dated 19 June 1877 from Hugh McMaster regarding a short character reference (enclosed) dated 16 June 1877 for McMaster from T. C. Fry.

Biographical / Historical

Acheson Archibald McMaster was admitted to Pembroke on 21 September 1877 as a pensioner, aged 19. He was the sixth son of John Walsh McMaster of Gilford, County Down, Ireland, who was deceased by the time of McMaster's matriculation, and was born there on 16 February 1859. McMaster was educated at Cheltenham College, Gloucestershire, and received his B.A. from Pembroke in 1881, with his M.A. following in 1884. He was ordained a Deacon at Durham in 1885, and was priested in 1887. Between 1885-1890 he served as Curate of Stranton, Durham, before taking up the post of Vicar of St. Aidan's, West Hartlepool from 1891-1897. He subsequently served as Vicar of Repton, Derbyshire from 1898-1911, and died on 28 July that year.
