Scope and Contents
1 manuscript letter signed from Pitt to Wilberforce and Wilberforce's note on the context of the letter in the space at the top of the first side. Pitt's letter begins by apologising for not being able to accept Wilberforce's invitation and goes on to say the King has written to ask him to accept the Lord Wardenship of the Cinque Ports upon the death of the Earl of Guildford and Pitt notes he intends to accept the offer [Pitt went on to hold the Wardenship until his death in 1806]. Wilberforce's note records that the King wrote to Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, to ask him to persuade Pitt to take the Wardenship.
