Biographical / Historical

In the early 1970s Olwyn Hughes (Ted Hughes's sister) bought a second hand Albion printing press, intending to use it to print her own Rainbow Press editions. Printing proved unexpectedly complicated and she gave the Press to her nephew, Nicholas Hughes. In 1979, Nicholas began to set and print the first publications of the Morrigu Press, which he ran from Court Green, North Tawton, Devon. Nicholas printed broadsides and pamphlets of his father's poems, all on hand-made paper, many illustrated by Ted Hughes. Over 20 Morrigu Press publications appeared in the 4 years to 1983. Leonard Baskin designed a logo for the press featuring a three-legged crow (‘Morrigu’ is an Irish goddess who sometimes took the form of this bird).
