Biographical / Historical

Marie de St. Pol was the fourth daughter of Guy, Count of St. Pol and Marie of Brittany. Little is known of her early childhood. In 1321 she married Aymer de Valence, 2nd Earl of Pembroke. He died in 1324 and they had no children. In 1347, with the permission of Edward III, Marie de St. Pol founded Pembroke College, then known as the Hall of Valence-Mary. She also organised the foundation of a Franciscan nunnery in 1342 at Denny Abbey. Marie de St. Pol died in 1377 and was buried in Denny Abbey.
