Biographical / Historical
'How the Whale Became' was first published by Faber & Faber in 1963, with illustrations by George Adamson. The first edition consisted of 'Why the Owl Behaves as it Does', 'How the Whale Became', 'How the Fox Came to be where it is', 'How the Polar Bear Became', 'How the Hyena Became', 'How the Tortoise Became', 'How the Bee Became', 'How the Cat Became', 'How the Donkey Became', 'How the Hare Became', 'How the Elephant Became'. The first American edition was published in 1964 with drawings by Rick Schreiter. The first English paperback edition, entitled 'How the Whale Became and Other Stories' was published in 1971 by Puffin Books with illustrations by George Adamson. The contents were the same as the first edition. The second English paperback edition was published in 1989 by Faber & Faber with illustrations by Adamson and with the same contents as the first edition.
