Birkett was admitted to Peterhouse College, Cambridge in 1707, having come up from Northumberland School. He was elected a Fellow of Peterhouse in 1714, a position he would hold until 1741. He was Tutor to Thomas Gray while Gray was a student at Peterhouse. Birkett died in 1745.
