An inscription on the back of the frame [now removed] read 'To the Master and Lady English in appreciation of their kindness and 5 very happy years as a Fellow 1945-1950. From Fred Dainton occupant of room E3 - now vanished to make way for new accommodation Fred Dainton 18 Nov 1994'. A note added later reads '(on the occasion of his 80th birthday celebrations at St. Catharine's) ?T. E.'.
