Biographical / Historical
The whole building was built by Essex in c. 1760 (at the time of the Ramsden extension, Staircases A and B) and was originally intended half for the Butler and half for the Porter. The original Porter's Lodge was on the present C Staircase (ground floor). Demolition of the Porter's Lodge started 1 Jan 1949.
