Biographical / Historical

Samuel Frankland did not bequeath Histon land, but the Histon land was added to the Frankland estate, presumably through purchase (date unknown). Some land was exchanged for land in Impington (date unknown). In 1944 about 21 acres of Impington land (in Histon Road) was exchanged with Messrs Chivers and Sons for land in Chesterton (formerly leased to them). It is defined as nos. 231, 220, 220, 221 and 222 on the 1903 O.S. Map. In 1948 about 60 acres of land in Impington and Cambridge (defined as nos. 310 and 311 on the 1926 O.S. Map) was sold to the borough of Cambridge for a housing project. A small plot of Histon land (just over 3 acres, no. 180 on the 1927 O.S. Map) was sold in 1951 and that was believed to be the last of the land owned there by the College. [Notes by JHB, 1988].
