Scope and Contents
Letters to Lord Powis relating to the foundation of Selwyn with a programme for the ceremony in 1881, the prayer made over the stone and a copy of a sermon made by the Bishop of Ely in 1882; as well as a letter from his nephew, also Lord Powis, offering the bundle of papers to College, 1940.

Biographical / Historical
The foundation stone of the college was laid by Edward Herbert, 3rd Earl of Powis, in a ceremony on 1 June 1881. He was the uncle of the Lord Powis who donated the letters to Selwyn (and who was an undergraduate at St John's but was present at the ceremony).
