Scope and Contents

The Marsh Collection comprises lectures, lecture notes, sermons, research notes and other papers. Including a translation of the Book of Holy Hierotheos; lectures, 1911-39; lecture notes, 1903-10; and sermons, 1911-43; Folder of examination papers (presumably those he was responsible for either setting or marking); Folder of Income Tax papers; Folder of mss book reviews, presumably intended for publication; Four folders containing notes relating to Marsh's work Apparatus to Apocalypse (possibly unpublished); Presentation welcome card signed by member of staff and students presented to Marsh when he was appointed fellow of Selwyn in 1919; Japanese musical score for Genrokuodori; Fragments of Syriac manuscripts, identified by Sebastian Brock in 1969. Material in English, Hebrew and Syriac.

Biographical / Historical

Frederick Shipley Marsh (1886-1953), (SE 1903) Professor of Divinity. Born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, 4 June 1886, the son of James William Marsh and Elizabeth Shipley. He was educated at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Gainsborough, and Selwyn College, Cambridge, BA 1906, MA 1910. He was a tutor at Kelham Theological College, 1909-11. He was ordained deacon, 1911, and priest, 1912. He worked as a curate at Chiswick, 1911-13; tutor at St Boniface College, Warminster, 1913-14; and lecturer at King's College, London, 1914-20. He served as a chaplain to the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 1916-19. He was a fellow of Selwyn College, 1920-35, and Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity, Cambridge University, 1935-51. He died in Cambridge on 26 October 1953.
