Biographical / Historical

Michael Clement Lapage 1923-2018 (SE 1946) was a former missionary and English rower who competed for Great Britain in the 1948 Summer Olympics. Lapage was born at Shaftesbury, Dorset, the son of Reginald H Lapage, vicar of Shaftesbury, and his wife Dora Ehlvers. He was educated at Monkton Combe School where he was a contemporary of fellow Olympic rower Alfred Mellows. During World War II Lapage saw service as a Fleet Air Arm pilot in the Pacific. After the war Lapage was at Selwyn College and was a member of the winning Cambridge boat in the 1948 Boat Race. This boat beat the record set by another Cambridge boat in ? 1934 and finished in 17 minutes 50 seconds (not beaten until ?) However his training for the Cambridge boat was at the expense of the College boat and so he did not participate in either the Lents or the Mays and they needed others. He was a torchbearer for the Olympics in 2012.
