Scope and Contents

Material collected by Tim Cutts while at Selwyn College between 1986-1992 manly comprising papers relating to the JCR, Chapel, Christian Union retreats and membership of other societies including the Music Society, Mountaineering Society, Monarchists and Debating Society as well as general college notices. The collection includes newsletters, articles, music sheets; also two letters written by Tim Cutts to his parents in his first term at Selwyn in 1986.

Biographical / Historical

Tim Cutts (SE 1986) was very active in the Chapel and various societies while at Selwyn. He was Chapel Clerk and member of the Christian Union, Music Society, Boat Club, MRC and Mountaineering Club. Chapel Clerk for four terms from Easter Term 1987 to Easter Term 1988, appointed by Harry Potter at the end of his time as Chaplain to assist his successor, Martin Kelly. Also C.U. Administrator during his first year (1986-7), which he explained meant photocopying notices and putting them in pigeon holes. He also led a College Bible-study group in his second year, 1987-8; was a member of the Music Society and went to nearly all the concerts, but never held any position in the Society. He didn't play an instrument, but usually sang in the termly choral and orchestral concerts. He rowed for one term, Michaelmas 1989, taking part in the Fairbairns and the Clare Novice Regatta. A member of the MCR as a fourth-year Linguist in 1989-90 and while doing P.G.C.E. in 1990-92; A member of the Mountaineering club from 1990-92, going on day trips to the Peak District and a weekend to Snowdonia.

Tim Cutt's comment, May 2018, "...not only did one write letters to one's parents, but communication with fellow students was by notes in pigeon holes or written on the A4 sheet which nearly everyone had stuck to their outer door. "
