CARPENTER AUTOBIOGRAPHY, 1950
Scope and Contents
Typescript memoir of autobiography of Spencer Cecil Carpenter with the main section relating to Selwyn and Cambridge in 1913-1922 in Chapter 8 pp. 152-186. It includes memories of Selwyn as a young College in 1913, Murray, the new Master and the other staff, Knott, Jordan and Williams. Lengthy reflections on the outbreak of the First World War include a brief mention of the affect of the war on Selwyn which was used for nurses from the First Eastern Hospital and a comment by Heffer, the Head Porter about a women's washing list (p. 164). There is a note on the suspension of salaries of College staff (p. 168) so that he worked at a Mission in London and then also as Priest-in-charge at St Luke's Chesterton while still living at Selwyn in Selwyn Close and teaching occasionally (p. 172). He also mentions the return of ex-Service men in January 1919 and the mix of military men and Freshmen (pp. 179-180). Carpenter became a Labour sypathiser at this time which was not liked by his Tory colleagues at Selwyn (pp. 180-181). There is also an earlier chapter (chapter 2) which covers his period as an undergraduate at Caius College, Cambridge.
